Problem Set 5
March 6, 2021

A please!

I need a paper written on the info below AGREEING with Dr. King.

  1. From module ten – King, in the Letter from Birmingham Jail, makes a distinction between just and unjust laws.  Do you agree with King?  Justify your answer.  If you agree, give an example of an unjust law that is on the books today.  Be sure to justify your analysis of this law as unjust.

HERE ARE THE CRITERIA’S FOR THE PAPER. PLZ READ CAREFULLY!

Your paper should include:

  1. A short introductory paragraph, with a clear thesis statement (e.g., I shall argue that Plato’s argument is unsound…).

  2. A brief statement of the ethical issue you intend to solve.

  3. A charitable reconstruction of the argument as presented by the author (you may, but need not, use standard form). In such a short essay, it is best to confine your analysis to a small argument, from within the larger article that you read.

  4. An brief explanation, in your own words, of the argument itself.

  5. An evaluation of the argument in terms of logical validity and truth/soundness. That means that, for any premise, if you think it’s false, you should explicitly show why, as well as consider counter-examples to your criticisms. Since this is an argumentative essay, this evaluation is the most important part of the essay, and will constitute your principle objection. Take some time to develop it carefully.

  6. A brief answer to your principle objection, on behalf of the author.

  7. Your reply to the answer on behalf of the author.

  8. A suitable concluding paragraph.

  9. At least one outside source, and at least as many non-internet sources as internet sources (Read that sentence again to be sure you understand it).

  10. No direct quotations. It is not necessary to directly quote any author. When it is important to do so, simply explain the position which he/she is defending. It is, however, necessary to cite all authors whose ideas you reference. Thus, if you begin a sentence with, e.g., “According to Plato…”, you should end that sentence with a citation.

  11. A clear and complete bibliography

    Criteria for Evaluation:

Your paper will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

    1. Papers must demonstrate a mastery of the concept of the argument. Ensure that you clearly spell out how and why the premises lead to the conclusion.

    2. Papers must demonstrate an understanding of the argument being discussed.

    3. Papers must demonstrate a mastery of the relevant concepts regarding the philosophical problem.

    4. Don’t worry about getting the `right’ answer. Rather, concentrate on the quality of reasoning used in your evaluation.

    5. Your grade will reflect the degree to which these rules and general requirements have been observed.

    6. Papers with frequent grammatical or spelling errors, or which otherwise do not reflect good quality academic writing, will be returned with no grade. If you don’t know the difference between `their’ and `there’, or the correct use of the semicolon, make an appointment with the writing lab before you submit your paper.

    General Requirements:

    1. Ensure that you satisfy these requirements before you turn in your paper:

    2. All papers must be typed, and double-spaced, with a standard font (i.e., Times New Roman, 12pt font). Please use either doc/docx/rtf/pdf format.

    3. All papers should have a unique title that reflects the subject of the article about which you are writing.

    4. All papers should be between 500 and 600 words. 498 is not sufficient, and 602 is too many. This should come out to between 2-3 pages. Do a word count, because I will.

    5. Do not include a title page. Type your name, the title, press enter and begin writing.

    6. Turn in the electronic version to Blackboard by the due date. Before doing so, read the plagiarism statement very carefully. Students who submit original work, come to class, turn in all assignments, etc, will pass the class. Students who submit unoriginal work will receive a failing grade in the course.

    Grade Notes:

Please refer to the syllabus, and the General Student Bulletin for information regarding the Academic Honor Code, and the Late Policy. In short, I do not accept late work, and do not tolerate Academic Dishonesty. Use Strunk and White’s The Elements of Style as a style model, and Weston’s Rulebook for Arguments for advice on how to write an argumentative essay. Please proofread your paper at least once before you give it to me.
