Owning and using a private car still remain a cherished dream of many in Singapore, despite the many measures taken to impose financial disincentives on private transport and to improve public transport over the past four decades. How do you see this situation evolving within the next 50 years?

The advent of the motorcar in the 20th century brought about freedom to travel but as more people started using them, cities including Singapore began to choke with traffic congestion. Realising the constraints of land, the State and City Planning Study (1967-71) concluded that a totally car dependent policy will not work and greater reliance has to be placed on public

transport. The subsequent transport strategy recommended the “push-pull” method to nudge this shift of travel to public transport. The “push” involved financial disincentives on usage of private transport and the “pull” involved vast improvements and convenience for using public transport of buses, trains and taxis . Over the past 5 years, cycling has made a come-back, private car hire and shared services of “uber” and “grab” have taken off and companies have started adopting flexi-time and tele-commuting to avoid travel.

Write an essay imagining how these current measures might be modified and new technologies and practices emerge to manage the transportation problem.
