Popular Culture and Social Change – Annotated Bibliography (6 sources) + paper 4-5 pages

Popular Culture and Social Change “Long-Form” Magazine Article

Annotated bibliography, and Paper

During the term, we will explore the intersection between mass consumed popular culture media (film, television, comics, and gaming) and traditional media (like newspapers / magazines / television / film), and how mass consumed aspects of popular culture can create access and voice to social justice, diversity, social issues, and critical inquiry by specifically focusing on realty television, documentary film, graphic memoir and short form comic journalism, comics, and gaming in our class. For example, the Norwegian reality television show Sweatshop—Dead Cheap Fashion uses the reality T.V. format as a platform to delve into the world of sweatshops. This show also intersects with traditional news media because Aftenposten, the national news organization of Norway, produced the show. Anthony Bourdain’s travel/food docuseries Parts Unknown looks at not just food, travel, and culture in the places he visits, but also real social issues in each episode. This show is produced by the traditional news media: CNN. What stories can our popular culture tell us that traditional media doesn’t or can’t due to limitations of space and medium (all of our media is owned by six corporations). Another example is Games for Change, which is an organization that creates video games that directly deal with a variety of social, health, and political issues.

Your main assignment will be a four to five page (approx. 1,800-2,000 words) “long-form” magazine article discussing any form of popular culture that interests you, and how this form is used to create awareness about a social issue. For example, what can science fiction teach us about gender, or immigration, or mass consumed managed media: For example, there is an episode on Star Trek Deep Space Nine that specifically deals with immigration. Most sci-fi deals with diversity as well. The genre of graphic memoir/novels was once the domain of male writers, but is now filled with books by women. Why is there an influx of women writing in this genre? Or with the rise of mass consumed cooking shows on the Food Network, are there food shows/documentaries that are starting to look issues like marine poaching, the farm to table movement, or the push toward humane food sourcing. There is lot of discussion around white-washing in Hollywood, both film and in television. These are just examples. You can focus on music, fashion, sports, film etc…Just choose a popular culture media format that interests you. In the past, students have written about white-washing in television by looking at Fresh Off the Boat; advertising and body image by looking at specific companies advertisements; fashion and lack of diversity; rap and homosexuality; Narco culture in film and music. You can choose whatever interests you. This paper is about you, and whatever you want to explore about popular culture and social issues. Just make sure to focus on something specific that you can cover in such a short article. For example, gender violence or lack of strong female protagonists in gaming is too broad—instead focus on one specific game and how these issues are perpetuated in that game.
