Imagine you woke up this morning to discover that one or more of your sex, gender, or sexuality categories had changed. Write an essay in which you:

1.Specify what changes have occurred. Are they related to sex, gender, and/or sexuality? And how so?

a.Your discussion in this section must be linked to course readings/material on biology, sexuality, intersexuality/transgender, and gender (particularly at the interactional level).

2.Detail how your life from this point forward will be shaped by your gender identity. Be sure to discuss how your “new” experiences will be different from those you would and could have anticipated having as a member of your original categories and consider how your experiences in life up to this point have or have not prepared you for your new future. You MUST:

a.Ground your discussion in the multi-level framework.

b.Cover at least 4 of the following additional topics. They are:

• femininity, masculinity, and sexuality
• gender socialization
• media and popular culture constructing bodies
• sports
• gendered violence
• education
• paid labor
• family

In short, this essay asks you to imagine that a transformation has occurred and analyze, explicitly using what you have learned in this course and referencing readings, both how your future might unfold and how your past has (or has not) prepared you for this new future.

Details and Instructions

The essay MUST be completed (and preferably type-written) prior to the start of the final exam. You will submit the essay as soon as you walk into the classroom to take the exam. PLEASE STAPLE YOUR ESSAY!!!

There is no minimum or maximum length for this essay. The essay is done, as far as I’m concerned, when you’ve adequately addressed the question. You should focus on answering the question well, not how long your essay is.

While you do not need to formally cite the material you’re using unless you quote directly (I’ll assume all material comes from the appropriate assigned readings), you must clearly indicate that you are relying on class material (and which material that is). Keep in mind that this is part of an exam; as such, I will evaluate you on how well you comprehend, utilize, and apply class material (see next page for more evaluation details). Class material includes discussions, but you should rely heavily on course readings and lecture material.

An important note about academic integrity: Since this is a take-home essay, you may consult any readings, notes, or other class materials. However, your work MUST BE ORIGINAL[1]and you MAY NOT collaborate with others on this essay (this means you may not discuss the essay—at all—with ANYONE else); I reserve the right to request an electronic copy of your essay to upload to Turnitin if I suspect that your work is not original or independent. Failure to submit a requested electronic copy will result in a score of 0 for the essay.

Evaluation

This essay is worth 30 pointsof your final exam grade.

Your essay will be evaluated in three categories: completion/comprehensiveness, use of course material, and synthesis/analysis/application. Key issues in each of these categories are described more fully below (this list is not necessarily exhaustive).

material is utilized and connected in novel, insightful ways

course material is applied to the question’s scenario, using specific hypothetical examples

Since this is an exam, the goal is really twofold: (1) to explicitly communicateyour grasp and understanding of the material and (2) to insightfully utilize course material as a tool to address the issue at hand. Only essays that comprehensively and insightfully complete both of these tasks will receive perfect or near-perfect scores.

Writing Quality

Although I will evaluate your essay mainly on its content, if the structure or writing quality interfere with your ability to convey (and my ability to discern) the content of your answer, your grade will be
