The journal of nursing administration May 2020 issue talked about the importance of research and evidence-based practice (EBP), why both are important, and how organizations can develop the structures and processes to inspire and advance a strong culture of clinical inquiry (Ives Erickson & Pappas, 2020). The article looked at the difference between research and EBP. The aim of research is to create new knowledge or confirm a theory; it begins with a question and uses systematic scientific inquiry to answer it (Ives Erickson & Pappas, 2020). One can do literature review to identify knowledge gaps, collect data and do analysis and conclude with results. EBP deals with finding and translating the best available evidence into clinical practice (Ives Erickson & Pappas, 2020). “It takes research 1 step further by connecting clinical decision-making with clinical expertise and patient preference” (Ives Erickson & Pappas, 2020). I think that gaining knowledge of EBP and learning strategies for implementation are critical skills for nurses in every healthcare setting. The article also mentioned that organizations should bring the spirit of inquiry to life especially among bedside nurses (Ives Erickson & Pappas, 2020). This is important as bedside nurses are working directly with patients and the care they provide has a direct impact on the patient’s health and well-being. Effective strategies to bring the spirit of inquiry to life are the use of professional practice model, which gives nurses at all levels a place to bring ideas, share their voices, and participate in collaborative decision-making. Another successful strategy is to establish structures and resources to support clinical nurses who want to explore research questions (Ives Erickson & Pappas, 2020). Article also mentioned that hospitals that are on the journey to achieving magnet excellence should consider if they have enough resources to create new knowledge; to support a culture of inquiry that advance nursing research (Ives Erickson & Pappas, 2020). The article also focused on how leadership must adopt a continuous improvement mind-set that give clinical nurses the time, means and accountability (Ives Erickson & Pappas, 2020). I think it is important for leadership to focus on continuous improvement strategies to bring about changes in the care setting. It concluded that a strong nursing research agenda can help organizations redesign care delivery and improve work environments, which lead to better patient care, experience, and outcomes (Ives Erickson & Pappas, 2020).

Today I wanted to talk about cultural competence in the health care. I found this interesting journal at WCU library that is called “From Cultural Competence to Cultural Respect: A Critical Review of Six Models”. According to the U.S Census Bureau (2011), the diversity of the U.S population has increased greatly. From 2000 to 2010 U.S Latino communities grew from 12.5% to 16.3%, African American communities increased from 12.3% to 12.6%, other races grew from 5.5% to 6.2%, and Asian communities increased 3.6% to 4.8%. By the year 2044 the United States is projected to be a “plurality nation”” (Botelo, Luma, 2020). As the cultural landscape of our world continues to diversity, practicing cultural competence in nursing practice has become more relevant than ever before. Cultural competence was created to assist health care providers to effectively deliver health care services that meet the social, cultural, and linguistic needs of patients. Respecting the different cultures of patients is an important and necessary skill. Cultural competencies are built upon knowledge, attitude, and skills. The six cultural competence models provide opportunities for nurses to learn the importance and techniques to master those skills. It is important for the organizations to routinely offer diversity training to all employees. Effective diversity and cultural competency training will mitigate misunderstanding and provide a respectful and quality patient encounter. The culturally competent nurses are those who are able to embrace differences while respecting and responding to the individual needs of those around them. Cultural understanding demands ongoing learning because culture is multiple, dynamic, and complex (Botelho, Lima, 2020).
